ISNews Video: The Carmel Market in Tel Aviv, “Shuk HaCarmel”

Thursday, April 15th, 2010

The Carmel Market, also known as “Shuk HaCarmel”, is the city’s biggest marketplace. It is located at the intersection of  Allenby Street and King George.

A little bit smaller than the one in Jerusalem, it is one crowded narrow alley where you can find anything at the lowest price. The first part of the market, coming from Allenby, is mostly souvenirs and clothing stands. The second part is the best place to find food products in Tel Aviv.

Here is a video of a walk from the entrance to the last stands. The only thing missing is the smell of the oriental spices…

The Zion Gate (שער ציון‎) is one of the eight gates built into the walls of the Old City of Jerusalem. It was built in 1540 for Suleiman the Magnificent. It is located in the south of the Old City and is facing Mount Zion.
A huge battle took place there during the 1948 War of Independance, that’s why so many bullet scars are visible on it.

Tour of the Old City of Jaffa

Wednesday, March 24th, 2010

Jaffa (Yafo – יָפוֹ) is an old port city, the oldest in the world, located in the south of Tel Aviv. According to the legend, it is named for Japheth, son of Noah, who built the city after the Great Flood.

Jaffa was an egyptian port. It’s possible to see the ruins from Tel Yafo, “Jaffa Hill”, which raises to a height of 130 ft. In 1799 Napoleon captured Jaffa and killed thousands of its inhabitants.

The first zionists arrived in the middle of the 19th century. 8000 jews were living in Jaffa in 1914, and the number increased rapidly.  Tel Aviv, which used to be a simple Jaffa neighborhood, became more and more important. Then, in 1950, it was Jaffa which became a quarter of Tel Aviv city.

The Old City of Jaffa has magnificient small streets where you can find many different kinds of art galleries. There is also a flea market that you can’t miss.

Here is a Jaffa tour in 12 pictures:
